Responding to ever increasing student numbers, to new initiatives such as the MSc in Data Science programme, and to recent external research funding success in all of our Research Groups including Probability and Statistics, the Department of Mathematics at the University of Sussex invites applications for the position of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer/Reader in Mathematics. In the 2014 research excellence framework (REF), 81 per cent of our research outputs were classified as world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*). Mathematics at Sussex was ranked 12th in the UK in a recent league table [Guardian 2018]. It also repeatedly scores well in the UK National Student Survey. Current research in mathematics at Sussex is grouped into Analysis and Partial Differential Equations, Geometry and Topology, Mathematics Applied to Biology, Mathematical Physics, Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing, and Probability and Statistics.
Applications are invited from all areas of mathematics strengthening and complementing the Department's research portfolio. Applications are particularly welcome from probability and statistics including, for example, mathematical statistics, rigorous data science, stochastic analysis, processes in random environments, and probabilistic modelling. The successful candidate will be an independent, enthusiastic and committed academic with a top research track record who is a team player and would enjoy working in a young, dynamic and growing Department. The Department and the University are committed to equality and valuing diversity, and recently received the Athena SWAN Bronze Award. Applications are particularly welcome from women and minority group candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in science and engineering at Sussex. The Department of Mathematics welcomes applications to academic posts from candidates who wish to work part-time or as job-sharers. The University offers various schemes to provide real benefits to parents, these can be found at http://www.sussex.ac.uk/humanresources/personnel/familyfriendlypolicies.
