Full time salary £41,526 - £77,108 (Lecturer full time starting salary is normally in the range £41,526 to £49,553. With potential progression once in post to £55,750 a year). Background
In a major strategic initiative, the University of Birmingham in collaboration with Jinan University, Guangzhou, China, has set up a Joint Institute for Teaching and Research, located on Jinan University's southern Panyu Campus in Guangzhou. The Institute, which took its first undergraduate intake in September 2017, delivers joint degree programmes in mathematics, attracting high quality undergraduate students from across China. These programmes are taught in English at the Joint Institute in Guangzhou, with the mathematics component being delivered by staff based at the University of Birmingham. We are looking for applicants with the ability to develop and deliver high quality modules into these programmes. The successful candidates will be expected to contribute substantially to maintaining and enhancing the School's high standards in both teaching and research (teaching only in the case of teaching focused appointments). The post holders will be based in the School of Mathematics in Birmingham and will typically be expected to make two trips to Guangzhou per year, each of one month's duration, to deliver intensively taught modules. There may perhaps be a small number of shorter trips.
The team currently consists of 11 members (after one colleague moved to Jinan University) and it will increase to 16 when fully staffed. This will allow four members to be based in Guangzhou during each teaching block, providing resilience to our delivery there. For this round of recruitment to the team, which is attracting exceptional new staff to the School of Mathematics in Birmingham, we are looking to appoint someone with experience of, or demonstrable potential for, teaching third year statistics modules.
Candidates working in any area of mathematics or statistics may apply. We particularly encourage applications from candidates working in theoretical or applied statistics, medical statistics, econometrics, stochastic modelling, financial mathematics or data science and machine learning. Candidates should hold a PhD, or equivalent, in statistics, mathematics or a related subject. Unless teaching focused, they will typically have an exciting and active research profile, possibly with research interests that lead to impact activity. Successful candidates will have a track record of (or demonstrable potential for) excellent, enthusiastic and committed teaching and learning in statistics to a broad range of students. They should be able to contribute to the development of the School's undergraduate or masters curricula. The posts are available at either Lecturer or Senior Lecturer grade depending on the relevant prior experience of the candidate.
