IMDEA Software, Madrid, Spain, is looking for PhD students and also interns (MSc final project / thesis, first research contact while in uni...) in Optimization and Machine Learning Theory, under the supervision of David Martínez-Rubiohttps://damaru2.github.io/
This is an exciting moment to work on the mathematical foundations of AI. Modern machine learning systems increasingly rely on ideas from optimization, online learning, and high-dimensional mathematics, and many of the fundamental theoretical questions remain open. The positions focus on developing new algorithms and rigorous mathematical theories for learning and optimization. If you consider yourself a good mathematician and are highly motivated to do something interesting and important with your talent, this is for you.
Research topics include:
- First-order optimization methods
- Machine learning theory
- Online learning
- Related areas
The work is primarily theoretical and involves designing algorithms with mathematical guarantees, proving complexity bounds, and developing new techniques in optimization and learning theory. Broad experience developing proofs is required.
IMDEA Software offers a highly international and English-speaking research environment, with close connections to theoretical machine learning and optimization communities.
Application:
Email me with the subject “PhD Application” or “Intern Application”.
Briefly write in the email why you are interested in working with me and why you are a good fit.
Include your detailed CV, and academic transcripts.
Contacts for asking for letters of recommendation are also beneficial, but not required in this first application email.
See https://damaru2.github.io/ for application instructions and more details about the research.
