The Department of Mathematical Sciences

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Department of Mathematical Sciences (DMS). The Department is a growing and vibrant department in the Faculty of Science and Health.

DMS is internationally known for its research in a range of areas, and offers an excellent education to its students. The Department is expanding due to increasing student numbers, and now wishes to make an appointment at the Professor level.

Duties of the post

The research of the department is structured in two groups: Data Science and Mathematics. The new Professor is expected to lead the Data Science research group of the department.

The post will include teaching on our data science, actuarial science and mathematics courses at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level. This may include delivering existing modules and developing new ones and enhancing our research-led education in this area.

The postholder will provide strategic leadership in education; build a sustained and effective record of impact at strategic level in regards to learning and teaching, make a substantial contribution to the international profile of the University through the generation of internationally excellent research, scholarship and teaching; pursue research that is world leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour, in keeping with the REF criteria; and generate substantial research income commensurate with subject area norms.

Other duties will include supervising undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD students and carrying out administrative duties.

Qualifications and Skills required

Applicants should have a distinguished academic record, including internationally excellent research, appropriate markers of academic esteem and credibility, and/or professional recognition, and a relevant doctoral-level research degree or equivalent professional experience or practise. You should also have a Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy or the ability to gain this at an appropriate level within a defined period of appointment.

You should evidence a strong, sustained record of academic publication at international or world-leading levels of recognition, with evidence of a clear publication plan for submission to future Research Excellence Framework (REF) programmes; have an established record of success in securing and managing substantial research grants (appropriate to the discipline); demonstrate teaching excellence at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels; and the ability to provide academic leadership in a range of appropriate contexts.
