Assistant Professor, Tenure Track ?Canada Research Chair – II in Statistical Ecology**

The Department of Statistics in conjunction with the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries (IOF) in the Faculty of Science invites applications from outstanding new investigators for a Canada Research Chair (CRC) - Tier II, in the area of Statistical Ecology. This will be a tenure track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop an independent research program and engage in developing and applying statistical methods and study designs to improve stock and habitat assessments of marine species, as well as spatial and population models that integrate multiple sources of biological, social and physical data. The successful applicant will be expected to catalyze synergies between Statistics and the IOF, and develop and contribute to research projects on fisheries issues of regional interest (British Columbia) in collaboration with scientists from other institutions and organizations. As a faculty member within both the Department of Statistics and the IOF, the successful candidate will also be expected to effectively participate in undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate teaching and supervisory activities, collaborate with other faculty members, secure external funding andmake academic service contributions in both units.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Statistics, Biostatistics, Quantitative Fisheries Ecology or a related field awarded within the past 10 years.
Applicants must also demonstrate excellence or potential for excellence in both teaching and research.

The IOF (www.oceans.ubc.ca) is home to a world-leading multidisciplinary research team with particular strength in innovative marine conservation and ecosystem-based management approaches and tools. It promotes and integrates research on fish and fisheries, including ecology, fisheries assessment, oceanography, community-based management, marine protected areas, fisheries policy and ethics, interactions with marine mammals, and aspects of fisheries that draw on economics, law, sociology, history, anthropology, and other disciplines.

The Department of Statistics (www.stat.ubc.ca) is a leading centre for statistical science research in North America. Faculty members excel in both theory and methods research and collaborative research with domain-area scientists.The department is home to the Statistical Consulting and Research Laboratory, which supports research both inside and outside the department. The department also hosts a vibrant graduate program and growing undergraduate programs.Recent efforts see the department emerging as a hub for innovation in statistical education.

The position is subject to final budgetary approval, and the individual selected will be subject to review and final approval by the CRC secretariat. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2016 or upon a mutually agreeable date.
