Two Lectureships in Statistics at Univ. of Kent

Lecturer in Statistics (TWO posts, full-time, permanent) University of Kent, School of Mathematics, Statistics & Actuarial Science Salary range: £31331 - £44607 Closing date: Sun 27 Oct 2013
Interviews: Mon 25 Nov 2013
Reference: STM0293
We are looking for someone with a track record in research, evidenced by publications in international statistical journals, and the ability to contribute strongly to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and project supervision in the School.
For these posts we have a strong preference for candidates with interests in applications of statistics in finance/econometrics or ecology. We anticipate making at least one appointment in the finance/econometrics area to cover future teaching needs.
The School offers a number of UG and PG programmes in actuarial science and finance, and further developments are planned. The Statistics Group runs an MSc in Statistics with Finance and several members of the group are actively involved in research in financial applications, particularly in Bayesian financial econometrics.
Kent has a long track record in Statistical Ecology and plays a significant role in the National Centre for Statistical Ecology (NCSE, http://www.ncse.org.uk). NCSE has attracted substantial EPSRC and NERC funding since 2005 and we are looking to build our capacity for future development in this area.
Person specification:
Applicants should hold a doctorate in Statistics or a closely aligned field, and a track record in research, evidenced by publications in international Statistics journals, conference presentations, etc, and ideally with relevant experience of teaching statistics at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Information about the Statistics Group and the School:
The Statistics group at Kent currently comprises 5 Professors, 1 Reader,
3 Senior Lecturers and 5 lecturers, as well as a postdoctoral fellow, a research associate and 17 PhD students. In RAE 2008, 65% of our research was assessed as internationally excellent or world leading. Our research emphasis is broad, including Bayesian methods, particularly Bayesian nonparametrics and MCMC, statistical ecology, nonparametric regression, applied probability and risk, time series and finance, medical image analysis, biological modelling and shape analysis. We have good collaborative links on campus, for example with the School of Biosciences and the Durrell Institute of Conservation Ecology.
The Statistics Group is part of the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science, which has approximately 50 full-time academic staff and offers a variety of UG and PG degrees, with about 1000 current students. The School has grown significantly in recent years and further growth is envisaged. As part of the planned growth, the University is currently preparing plans for a new building for the School, which is expected to be ready by 2016/17. The School is a supporter of the London Mathematical Society's Good Practice Scheme and is working towards an application for an Athena SWAN Department award.
