Post Doctoral Research Associate - Stochastic Spatial Modelling - IRC229129

We are advertising for a scientist who will under undertake statistical research to identify spatial statistical models which can be used to quantify physical changes in the structure of the soil as inferred from the data on X-ray attenuation (XrA) in the CT images. We propose to do this by examining the spatial statistical properties of (XrA) with models for non-stationary covariance which can show how characteristic scales of spatial dependence vary, for example, with distance from the root. Provisional results have shown that the wavelet transform may be informative about such non-stationarity. BGS has internationally-recognized research capacity in spatial statistics, and the position is with this team in the Environmental Modelling Directorate. You will benefit from working in this team, and building on recent research on non-stationary models, you will be expected to make independent and original contributions. The project will involve active collaboration with soil microbiologists, soil physicists and plant scientists at UoN, including the world-leading Hounsfield facility for X-ray CT of soil-plant systems at Sutton Bonington.
