JOB: Professor in Statistics, Umeå, Sweden

The Department of Statistics at the Umeå School of Business and Economics, Umeå University, is recruiting a full-time Professor in Statistics.

The Department of Statistics has approximately 30 employees. We conduct methodological research with applications in the social, educational, and medical sciences. The prominent research areas are causal inference, psychometrics, and medical statistics. The department offers a PhD program in statistics.

Responsibilities

As Professor in Statistics, you will be expected to lead research, and to contribute to the development of the research and educational environment of the department. This is typically done by conducting your own research, and by engaging in teaching and supervision activities at the bachelor, master and doctoral levels. You are also expected to collaborate with researchers in other disciplines, in order to strengthen and develop the empirical research at the USBE and Umeå University. Responsibilities will also include informing about research and development activities, to initiate and participate in the planning of research projects, and to work actively on applications for external funding. The location of employment is Umeå.

Qualifications and Eligibility

To be eligible for the position as a professor, the candidate must have shown scientific as well as pedagogic skills in accordance with Umeå University employment regulations for professors. The candidate must have shown academic and teaching skills within Statistics.

As assessment criteria for the appointment of a professor, the degree of expertise that is required for the position will be taken into account. In addition, the degree of administrative and other skills of importance for the subject matter that the University determines the position, and the duties that the position will involve.

Scientific skills are demonstrated through independent research within the field of statistics at a high international level, evidence of the ability to plan and manage scientific activities, and through the ability to communicate research both within the scientific community and to the wider society. Skills in research leadership and successful supervision of PhD students will also be assessed. Particular emphasis will be placed on proven ability to attract research funding from national and international research funding agencies.

Pedagogic skills refer to the applicant’s experience of working with students, to the pedagogic progress demonstrated by the applicant, and to the perceived ability of the applicant to be able to contribute to the advancement of the department educational activities. This includes also participating in postgraduate educational activities such as PhD student supervision and involvement in the design and implementation of courses and seminars. Administrative skills encompass the ability to develop and lead activities and personnel. Demonstrated ability to collaborate and interact with the wider society, as well as proven ability to establish and maintain national and international networks in research is a merit.
