The EPSRC & MRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Statistical Science is now inviting applications for 10 fully-funded DPhil studentships at the University of Oxford and the University of Warwick to start in October 2016. Students with a strong background in mathematics and statistics are particularly encouraged to apply.
The CDT focuses on the following research areas:
Research Areas: Computational Statistics; Statistical Methodology; Machine Learning ; Probability ; Statistical Genetics ; Bioinformatics
Successful researchers will be able to program on distributed high-performance computing and communicate effectively with ‘data owners’ (before and after the data collection). They will use these skills and this knowledge to develop the new theories, methods and algorithms needed for the analysis of “big data” on massively parallel modern computing devices. This will revolutionise the way in which the science industry and government manipulate and handle massive, heterogeneous data objects.
As a successful candidate you will be one of 10 students starting a 4 year programme in October 2016. You will join a cohort based training environment that makes statistics and peer to peer learning a priority.
Research training is delivered through eight two-week mini-projects supplemented by a small number of lectures in your first year. You will be open to exploring different learning styles and ready to embrace a multi-disciplinary approach to learning. In addition to the technical training provided by our internationally renowned research staff, we will aim to broaden your skills in order to flourish in an industry, academic and government environment. This covers scientific writing, presentation skills, group work, time management/planning and working with industry. This whole training package will prepare you for your remaining 3 years DPhil research in scalable statistical methods at Oxford or Warwick.
Because of constraints from funding agencies, there are different rules for funding depending on your fee status:
* UK and EU students: Full funding (fees and stipend) is available for successful candidates.
* Non-EU students: Full funding may be available for successful candidates. These studentships are highly sought after.
