University Lecturer in the Statistics and Mathematics of Information

Statistical Laboratory within the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics

Applications are invited for a University Lectureship in the Statistics and Mathematics of Information to commence on 1st October 2017 or by agreement. Appointment will be made at an appropriate point on the University scale and will be for a probationary period of five years with appointment to the retiring age thereafter, subject to satisfactory performance.

Candidates should hold a PhD or equivalent in statistics, mathematics or a closely related subject, and have an outstanding record of research in mathematical aspects of data science. Preference will be given to candidates with a research focus in statistics. Willingness to engage in an interdisciplinary and cross-cutting research is very desirable.

This Lectureship is based in the Statistical Laboratory and is affiliated with the new Cantab Capital Institute for Mathematics of Information (CCIMI) which is hosted within the Faculty of Mathematics. It accommodates research activity on fundamental mathematical and statistical problems and methodology for understanding, analysing, processing and simulating data.

The responsibilities of a University Lecturer are to engage in the teaching and research programmes of the Department and University under the direction of the Director of the Statistical Laboratory. Lecturers are expected to supervise PhD students, to apply for research grants, and to participate in administration and examining.

Duties specific to this post might include: supporting the CCIMI Director in running the Institute and contributing to the Institute's activities such as seminars, supervising students and PostDocs, offering graduate/advanced courses on a topic of their own expertise within the realm of Mathematics of Information, suggesting researchers to be invited within the Institute's distinguished visitor programme, facilitating industrial links and helping in outreach activities; engagements within the Faculty of Mathematics, in particular encouraging intra-disciplinary links between applied and pure mathematics and statistics.

The expected total teaching and administration load for this position will conform to the normal expected load for lecturers within the department.

In exceptional circumstances, it may be possible to offer a supplement to the salary range stated for this role of up to £10,000. Any such supplement would be awarded on the basis of a demonstrable history of exceptional achievement and is entirely at the discretion of the University. Extra remuneration may also be received for additional College responsibilities.
